The link to the pattern and the charts is posted below, in red. This is the only one that I have access to myself, and it’s the only one I’ve knitted myself. Someone commented that she had a similar pattern, which has prompted many to post here asking for it. Apparently she has not responded to requests posted in comments.
While browsing knitting patterns, this vintage 1940’s pattern caught my eye. More than 20 years ago, my mother-in-law, Louise, knitted this stocking for my husband, using the Christmas tree and Santa motifs, and how could I not post the pattern here?! Ours is shown on the left, and the generic below.

I am looking for a pattern about the same age and style and wonder if you’ve ever seen it. It has Christmas trees, candles and a wreathe in the large striped areas and is also personalized. My husband’s aunt knit one for him 58 years ago when he was born. Her daughters gave me the pattern. I knitted stockings for 5 of my six children before losing the pattern somehow during two moves. I’d like to make one for my youngest daughter and two grandchildren. Please let me know if you ever run across one.

Do you have a copy of the pattern at the top with “Tony?” My mother made them for all family members, friends, their children, etc. She thought she was through so gave away the pattern. When our daughter married her husband requested “the official family Christmas sock.” Now we also have a 3 month old granddaughter. I’m trying to recreate the sock off of mine bought would be thrilled to actually have the pattern.

My sister and I have the same stockings, knitted by my mother’s friend in the early 50s! It’s a great sock and holds lots and lots of goodies!

My family also has these stockings knitted by my husbands grandmother. Ours have a variation of added reindeer in two different views; one is the reindeer’s face from the front and the other is a standing raindeer, a side view. Other alteration is the word “Noel” at an angle.
I know there must have been more design alternatives in the original pattern. Has anyone ever come across the complete original?

I have been searching for the “Tony” stocking pattern above for ages. I used the pattern about 30 years ago and lost it. Now I need to knit one for my godchild’s son! I printed the pattern of the generic but how do you determine how many rows to knit of each color so that the ‘Tony” pattern is the right size for the santa and the trees. It must have been an option on the original pattern since the stockings I have are so close to your “tony” stocking. Also mine are worked with duplicate stitch rather than knitting the pattern into the stocking. Can you help?

Hi! I have been searching for the “Tony” pattern for about 6 weeks. I knitted one about 30 years ago for my godchild and now she has a son and husband. I think there must have been a pattern published since the one I knitted is almost identical. My daughters each have one that was given to them when they were born in 1978 and 1980. Does anyone know where I can find the published pattern? I am not a skilled knitter and the duplicate stitch worked well for me instead of changing thread and knitting the pattern into the stocking. I think it was published by Bernat. I called them and they have lost all their patterns before 1991. I think the copyright has expired and it would be ok to copy it. Would love some help finding it! Hello, I too, have been searching for patterns of Christmas stockings that were popular in the late 1940’s. My husband and all of his first cousins were presented with a personalized stocking of their own soon after the babies were born I believe it was knit on two needles, not double pointed nor circular. It has a Santa figure in a sleigh on one side and the reindeer that pulls it on the other. My brother and sister-in-law lost their stockings due to a house fire and I would love to knit them new ones. If any one can help I would be very grateful.

My husband’s family had these stockings with a candle motif in the green band…his sweet aunt knitted one for each of the new additions until she was unable to anymore. Now my daughter in law is starting the tradition again. So glad to hear others have enjoyed these as much as we have!

Renee: I, too, would love to get the pattern with the wreath, candles, and trees that Maggie, Jeff, and others were coveting. My grandmother knit one for me and for each of my 5 brothers and sisters. My mom subsequently knit one for each of her 15 grandchildren. I’m soon to be a grandmother myself and would love to carry on the tradition, but am unable to locate my mom’s pattern.

Hello Ladies, Help please. I am the mother of 8,grandmother of 22, and gr. grandma of 8 so I have knitted more of these great stockings than I can count. In the 50’s Ipurchased every new kit that I found in any store that sold them. Little by little the store4s stopped carrying them so for years I used the same patterns I had. I thought no company was making them anymore. Due to health problems that effect4d my hands, I can no longer crochet and I thought i could’t knit, but recently found that I can; though it takes me a bit longer to do so. I am thrilled! I have taught one of my daughters to make them and I am now teaching my niece. It is an old Bernat pattern called Jolly Whiskers Stocking, it has a Santa face you add whiskers on to beard area and it has crossed candy canes at the instep. This inspired me to check on the Bernat website and I 3was overwhelmed with what is available. I am so excited
Some are ones that I made back in the 50’s. My proplem is I’m pretty new at this computer stuff and I don’t know how to go about it I would love to get the kits or copies of the patterns you are talking about here, and exchange any I may have that aren’t under copyright. Could you please email me a copy of the “Tony” stocking pattern. I made one for my great nephew for a baby shower gift this month and even though they loved it everyone said its different than the original Grandma made. I have a similar pattern from 1949. It’s my husbands family’s Christmas tradition to gift a sock to the newest member of the family ether by marriage or for the birth of baby. It’s knit on two needles and I’m stuck! I’ve completed the upper potion with the pattern and now have to tackle the heel section. Does anyone know of a good tutorial?

Forgot to mention that these patterns are still available for purchase. One receives a very good copy of the original leaflet that was sold in the 40’s and 50’s. I enlarged the graph at a copying store with great results

I just tried to follow this thread..I too have stockings that my great grandmother knitted that match the ‘Tony’ stocking, and that I would like to reproduce for my soon to arrive grandchildren. I am trying to get a copy of the pattern for the ‘TONY’ stocking. I did print out the link for the pattern for the other vintage stocking that had the ‘dolls’ on one of the bands, however I also agree that the ‘TONY’ stocking had an original pattern. Does anyone on the blog have that original pattern?

A friend has ask me to knit the Tony stocking for them. They have a “Tony” stocking from many years ago. The stitching looks like it was machine made? Is this possible? Every stitch is perfect and the exact same size all the way through. Is this considered an easy, medium or harder pattern?

My mother in law hand knitted the Tony stocking. I’ve made several like it. It’s easy, except for the stranding parts like the name and the little figure. You have to be careful not to strand too tightly or it pulls.

Hello. Do you have a copy if the pattern for the stocking with “Tony” on top? They are a tradition in my family as well, but the great aunt who does them was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and isn’t able to do one for the newest baby. My mother made this stocking for my sister and me. I continued the traditional making the stocking for my daughters, sons-in-law, nieces and grandchildren. It has created a wonderful tradition in our family and a link to past generations.

I’m stuck on the pattern! I can’t turn the heel!!! Can anyone give me a little more instruction? I get stuck with the “purl to the gap”. Where does the gussett come in? I need more details than these instructions give me because I’m not an expert knitter. My grandson is two and is expecting this stocking for Christmas. 😦 Is there anyone on here that can give me a little more detail to the heel instructions? I’ve knit the heel flap and have 12 SS rows…but now I’m stuck. Help, PLEASE!!
