Hemp and Ribbon Baskets

This summer I’ve been fooling around with what is a new material for me, hemp twine. I’ve seen some ethnic baskets at local fairs, and thought I’d try a few of my own creation. Here are the results, which I have to say I’m pretty pleased with. I didn’t follow a pattern, simply starting with a round crocheted base and building up from there. It’s not free form crochet, exactly, but it’s liberating to work without specific instructions to follow.

  1. Lovely! I love hemp twine as a medium! I have a pattern I want to submit to a crochet magazine for a twine purse, let me know if you’d like to test it out — I’d be happy to send it to you… (I have a pic posted in ravelry under projects for geckogrrl.)

I love them. You once featured a jute basket as well that I have saved to try. Now, as a novice I have to ask, you held the ribbon or another color of yarn with the hemp as you crocheted? And to begin in the round I can basically follow any pattern I have for increasing until I have the size base I want?

    I love your site. Thanks.

Yes, hold the colored yarn together with the jute. And yes, you can make the base any size.
I’m so glad you’ve found things here that you like. Thanks so much for visiting.
